Free SAP-C02 Study Resources: The Official AWS Material Worth Your Time

You can cover the whole SAP-C02 syllabus with free official AWS material. Here are the resources that matter for the Solutions Architect Professional exam, the order to use them in, and the one gap free material leaves open.

By Sailor Team , September 29, 2026

Everything SAP-C02 tests is documented by AWS, and almost all of that documentation is free. Paid material buys you structure and rehearsal, not access. If the 300 USD exam fee is your whole budget, you can still cover the syllabus.

The catch is volume. The professional exam spans more services than any associate exam, so the value of a free resource is in how much reading it saves you. Here is the kit, in the order worth using it.

Start With the Exam Guide

The SAP-C02 exam guide on docs.aws.amazon.com is the only document that defines what is in scope. Read it before you open anything else.

It is more than a domain list. Under the four domains sit twenty task statements, and each task carries the knowledge and skills AWS expects, often with named services as examples. The guide also links four reference pages that most candidates never open:

  • Technologies and Concepts, the broad topic areas the exam draws on
  • In-Scope AWS Services, the services that can be the tested concept
  • Out-of-Scope AWS Services, the services that will never be the right answer
  • Mentions of AWS Services on the Exam, which explains how service names are shortened on the exam

The out-of-scope list alone saves weeks. If a service is on it, it can appear as a wrong option and it will never be what the question is testing.

What the guide tells you outright:

  • 75 questions in 180 minutes, of which 65 are scored and 10 are unscored and not identified
  • Two response types only, multiple choice with one correct answer and multiple response with two or more correct answers out of five or more, where you must select every correct response to earn credit
  • A scaled score of 100 to 1,000 with a minimum passing score of 750
  • A compensatory model, so you pass on the overall score rather than domain by domain

One timing note for 2026. AWS has announced SAP-C03, with registration opening October 27, 2026, and SAP-C02 remains available until mid November 2026. Everything on this page targets SAP-C02. Our SAP-C02 vs SAP-C03 guide covers the decision.

The Official Sample Questions

AWS publishes a free set of ten SAP-C02 sample questions as a PDF, with answers and short explanations. Half of them are multiple response, including a Select THREE item.

Do not use them to measure readiness. Ten questions is too small a sample for that. Use them to learn how AWS writes: the length of the stems, the way constraints hide in the middle of a paragraph, and question lines that ask for the “LEAST change to the architecture” or the changes that will “MOST reduce costs”. Once that voice is familiar, the real exam feels less foreign.

The Well-Architected Framework

The exam guide states that SAP-C02 validates the ability to design optimized AWS solutions based on the AWS Well-Architected Framework. That makes the framework the vocabulary of the exam.

Read the reliability, security, cost optimization, and operational excellence pillars first, because the four SAP-C02 domains lean on them most heavily. You will not be asked to name a pillar. You will be asked to make the choice a pillar recommends, under a constraint the stem gives you. Our Well-Architected Framework guide for SAP-C02 connects each pillar to the exam.

Three Whitepapers That Carry Their Weight

Most whitepapers are optional. These three map directly onto large parts of the exam:

Organizing Your AWS Environment Using Multiple Accounts. The reference for OU design, the purpose of security and log archive accounts, and where service control policies belong. Domain 1 draws on it constantly.

Disaster Recovery of Workloads on AWS: Recovery in the Cloud. It lays out backup and restore, pilot light, warm standby, and multi-site active/active against recovery time and recovery point objectives. The exam guide names those four strategies, and a large share of reliability questions turn on matching one of them to a stated RTO.

AWS Prescriptive Guidance on migration. The exam guide names the seven common migration strategies, and AWS Prescriptive Guidance publishes free guides on migration strategy, portfolio assessment, and wave planning. Domain 4 is a fifth of the scored content, and this is where its vocabulary comes from.

Service Documentation and FAQs

Scenario questions are decided by details: a quota, a replication mode, an account boundary, a routing behavior. Those details live in the service documentation and the service FAQ pages.

For SAP-C02, the pages worth reading end to end are AWS Organizations, AWS Transit Gateway, AWS Direct Connect, Amazon Route 53 Resolver, AWS KMS, Amazon Aurora global databases, Amazon S3 replication, AWS Application Migration Service, and AWS DMS. A useful habit: for each service, write down the three facts that would decide a design question. For Transit Gateway, that might be that attachments associate with exactly one route table, that propagation is separate from association, and that peering between Regions uses static routes. Three facts per service, collected over a few weeks, becomes a better revision sheet than anything you can buy.

AWS Skill Builder

The SAP-C02 certification page links an exam preparation plan on AWS Skill Builder. The catalog changes, and some content sits behind a subscription, so check what is currently free when you start rather than trusting a list from last year. Any official practice question set offered there is worth taking slowly, because its phrasing is written by the same people who write the exam.

Build Something, but Watch the Bill

At associate level a Free Tier account covers most practice. At professional level it does not. Direct Connect, Transit Gateway attachments, NAT gateways, and cross-Region replication all bill by the hour or by the gigabyte.

The good news is that some of the most tested services cost nothing to explore. AWS Organizations, service control policies, and IAM Identity Center setup carry no charge of their own. Build an organization with a few member accounts, attach a deny policy to an OU, and watch what the member account can no longer do. For the paid services, build, test, and tear down in the same sitting, and set an AWS Budgets alert before you start.

The Gap Free Resources Leave

Free material teaches the content. It does not give you a full length rehearsal.

The thing that surprises well prepared candidates is not a missing fact. It is stamina. Seventy five long scenarios in 180 minutes is 2.4 minutes per item, and by question 50 the difference between the option that works and the option with the LEAST operational overhead gets harder to see. You cannot build that tolerance by reading.

Our free 20-question SAP-C02 practice test closes part of that gap at no cost. It is written at full exam depth, every question explains every option, and there is no signup. When you want the full rehearsal, the SAP-C02 mock exam bundle gives you 8 timed 180-minute exams of 75 questions each plus that free sample, 620 unique questions in total, each exam scored on the same 100 to 1,000 scale against the 750 bar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pass SAP-C02 using only free resources?

Yes. The exam guide, the service documentation, the Well-Architected Framework, and a handful of whitepapers cover the syllabus. What free material cannot give you is repeated full length practice under the clock.

Are the official SAP-C02 sample questions enough practice?

No. Ten questions show you the style but tell you little about readiness. Use them for voice, then practice at full length.

How long does free preparation take?

For someone with the recommended two or more years of AWS design experience, eight to twelve weeks of steady evening study is typical. Less hands-on experience means more time building, not more time reading.

What is the single most valuable free resource?

The exam guide, read at the start and again in your final week. Its task statements and service lists tell you exactly where your study time belongs.

Next Steps

Open the exam guide tonight, then take the free 20-question SAP-C02 practice test to see which domain needs your first week. If you want a ready-made calendar, the 12-week SAP-C02 study plan spreads the domains out week by week, and the SAP-C02 passing score explained tells you what your result will mean.
