SAA-C03 vs AZ-104: Which Cloud Certification Should You Take First?

AWS Solutions Architect Associate or Azure Administrator Associate? A side by side comparison of exam format, scoring, renewal, the job each one describes, and how to choose when your employer has not chosen for you.

By Sailor Team , September 16, 2026

Two associate credentials, two clouds, one evening of research that usually ends in a tab war. AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate (SAA-C03) and Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) sit at the same career level and cost about the same, and they test different jobs.

Here is the comparison that actually decides it.

They Test Different Jobs

SAA-C03 asks you to choose. The exam validates the ability to design solutions on the AWS Well-Architected Framework, and almost every question is a scenario where several options would work and one is best against a stated constraint. Cheapest that still survives the loss of an Availability Zone. Least operational overhead that still meets the recovery point objective. You never type a command. You pick a design and you defend it against three plausible alternatives.

AZ-104 asks you to operate. It measures whether you can implement, manage, and monitor identity, governance, storage, compute, and virtual networks. Role assignments and their scope. Storage firewalls and shared access signatures. Scale sets and template deployments. Peering, network security groups, and routing. Backup and alerting. It expects you to work from the portal, PowerShell, the CLI, and Bicep or ARM templates.

Read those two paragraphs again as job descriptions rather than syllabuses. One is the person in the design review. The other is the person who keeps the estate running. Both are good jobs and they are not the same job.

What Each Exam Feels Like

SAA-C03 is 65 questions in 130 minutes, two minutes per item. Only 50 of them are scored and the other 15 are unscored pilot questions that are never identified, so you treat all 65 as real. The stems are scenarios, the options are full sentences, and the difficulty lives in the difference between an option that works and an option that works within the constraint. The scoring model is compensatory, so you pass on the overall score rather than domain by domain.

AZ-104 is 100 minutes with a question count Microsoft does not publish. The variety is wider: single answer items, multiple response, yes or no statement sets, ordering tasks, and one or two case studies, plus a live lab section that appears for some candidates. The pressure is different. You are moving between formats and, if the lab appears, between reading and doing.

If you dislike surprises about format, SAA-C03 is the more predictable sitting. If you would rather be marked on doing than on choosing, AZ-104 fits you better.

Renewal Is a Real Difference

AWS certifications are active for three years, and recertifying means sitting the exam again or an approved path published by AWS at that time.

Microsoft role based certifications are valid for one year and renew through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn, which you can take from home in a browser window that stays open to the documentation. Confirm the current renewal window and terms on Microsoft Learn, since Microsoft sets them per certification.

Three years of not thinking about it against a short annual check in. Neither is obviously better, but the rhythms are different and it is worth knowing which one suits you before you commit.

How to Choose

Follow the job, not the market share. If you are already in a Microsoft shop, AZ-104 makes you more useful next Monday. If your team runs on AWS, or you are aiming at roles where architecture is the deliverable, SAA-C03 is the one hiring managers name in the posting.

Follow your role, not your curiosity. Someone who spends the week on tickets, access requests, and backup jobs is closer to AZ-104. Someone who spends it in design documents and trade off arguments is closer to SAA-C03.

If you genuinely have a free choice, start with SAA-C03. The design vocabulary it drills, availability against durability, coupling, recovery objectives, purchasing models, transfers cleanly to any cloud, and the second credential in the other cloud gets noticeably easier once you have one.

Do not take both at once. The service names collide in ways that create false confidence. Finish one, work with it for a few months, then start the other.

Preparing for Either One

The preparation shape is the same even though the content differs.

  1. Start with the official source. The SAA-C03 exam guide on the AWS site and the AZ-104 skills measured list on Microsoft Learn both tell you exactly what is in scope, and both are free.
  2. Build the things they describe. A VPC with public and private subnets and an Auto Scaling group behind a load balancer for AWS. A hub and spoke network with a storage account behind a firewall for Azure.
  3. Rehearse under the clock. The failure mode that surprises people is not ignorance, it is pace. Full length mock exams under the real time limit expose that early.
  4. Read every miss. The explanation is where the learning is, not the score.

When you are ready to test yourself, the SAA-C03 mock exam bundle gives you 8 timed 130-minute exams of 65 questions each plus a free 20-question sample, 540 unique questions scored on the same 100 to 1000 scale as the real exam. The AZ-104 mock exam bundle does the same for Azure with 8 timed 100-minute exams of 50 questions each.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is harder, SAA-C03 or AZ-104?

They are hard in different ways. SAA-C03 is harder to reason about, because several options are workable and you have to find the one that fits the constraint. AZ-104 is harder to prepare for, because the format varies and it may include a live lab. Candidates coming from an operations background usually find AZ-104 more natural, and candidates who already write design documents usually find SAA-C03 more natural.

Which certification pays more?

Compensation tracks the role and the region far more than the badge. An architect role pays more than an administrator role in most markets, which is a fact about the job rather than about the exam.

Can I take AZ-104 if I only know AWS?

Yes, and the concepts transfer, but the names and the defaults do not. Budget real study time for identity, because Microsoft Entra ID and Azure role based access control behave differently from IAM in ways that catch experienced AWS engineers.

Do I need a foundation certification first?

Neither exam has a formal prerequisite. If you are new to cloud entirely, a fundamentals credential gives you vocabulary, but people with a year of hands on experience regularly go straight to the associate.

Which one should I take if I want to work anywhere?

SAA-C03 appears in more job postings globally, and the design vocabulary carries across clouds. That is the usual tie breaker when no employer has chosen for you.

Next Steps

Try before you commit. The free 20-question SAA-C03 practice test and the free AZ-104 practice test are both written at full exam depth with an explanation on every item and no signup required. Twenty questions in each will tell you more about which exam suits you than another hour of comparison reading.

If you have already settled on AWS, the SAA-C03 certification guide covers format, domains, and prerequisites in detail.
